Applications of Concrete Mixer on the Construction Site

Concrete mixer trucks are widely used in making ready-mix concrete. It is an integral part of the construction project. They usually carry ready-to-use cement from production plants to the construction site, providing a convenient, quick, and portable concrete mix at any project stage. Hire Ready-mix Concrete Kent for the concrete preparation process with the help of an excellent quality mixer. Here are why concrete mixers are used widely in the construction industry.

What is a concrete mixer?

A concrete mixer combines cement evenly to form aggregates into concrete. Generally, a concrete mixer uses a rotating drum to mix the ingredients.

In a conventional method, workers prepared the concrete mix manually, which was time-consuming, and often the mixture was not precise. But with the rise in the construction industry, technological advances came into the picture. Even in small construction work, concrete is prepared using concrete mixers of varied strength.

A concrete mixer is quick and more precise than conventional methods. Some concrete mixers dispense the concrete mixture directly to the construction site. Portable mixers are used in small to medium-scale projects; sometimes, concrete batching plants are built at the construction site for large-scale projects. As per the requirement of your site, various types of concrete mixers and sizes are available.

How does it work?

Technological advancements have changed and transformed concrete mixer designs over the years. A concrete mixer, also known as an in-transit mixer or concrete-mix truck, carries dry materials and water. The mixing of dry material and water happens during the transportation, or the concrete mix gets loaded into the mixing drum. However, depending upon the task, the concrete can be either mixed at the plant or in a mixed truck.

The drum attached to the truck rotates while the truck moves to keep the concrete agitated; therefore, the concrete mix remains liquid until it gets delivered to the construction site. Some concrete mixers have an added water tank in the truck, allowing them to add water to the mix when needed.

There is a multi-purpose blade inside the mixer; it runs the internal length of the drum in a spiral shape. It agitates and mixes the concrete while rotating the base of the drum. When the drum rotates in a reversed direction, the spiral acts as a screw pump.

Types of Concrete Mixtures

Batch Mixer

Batch mixers produce one concrete batch at a time and are most commonly used in construction work. It has a drum with blades, which mixes all the ingredients by rotating them and finally discharges them when the concrete mixer is ready. The rotation process is repeated until the required concrete mix is obtained.

There are two types of batch mixers.

Drum mixer: It has a double conical frustum-shaped drum. Depending upon the drum type, it has either single or multiple blades to mix the concrete aggregates.

Pan mixer: It has a cylindrical pan instead of a drum. Pan mixers also consist of blades that facilitate the concrete mixing process. Generally, blades have a star shape with scrapers attached to the pan’s surface to achieve optimum efficiency.

Pan mixer is divided into two modes of operation:

  • A pan mixer with a fixed pan and blades rotate on a vertical axis.
  • Some pan mixers have fixed blades while the pan rotates on a vertical axis.

A Pan mixer is known as the most efficient type of mixer. Both operating categories are equally efficient and more suitable for preparing lean concrete mixes.

Continuous Mixer

Continuous mixers are ideal for larger projects such as bridges or tunnels, as they continuously mix the concrete without interruption. This type of mixer generally gets set up at the construction site. The separate feeder unit will allow material intake, and a mixer will mix the concrete until it is ready for discharge.

Whether a batch or a continuous mixer, Ready-mix concrete Kent provides superior quality and impressive mixers for your construction projects.

Benefits of Having Concrete Mixture Onsite

Saves Time

The concrete provider can efficiently deliver concrete on the same day as your order; it will be mainly helpful to you when you are working on a tight deadline. Get in touch with RMS Ready-mix Specialists to discuss same-day availability.

Better Capacity

The concrete mixer transports concrete from 0.5 cubic meters to 8 cubic meters in volume, resulting in fewer trips to your construction site. It will also save your fuel, therefore, money.

Cost-effective

When you decide not to mix concrete on site, it saves your staff time. Time saved with a concrete mixer will reflect in the labor cost. Since the concrete mix gets prepared at the plant, you will always get the grade of concrete you have asked for. Hence, it will never get wasted.
